THe STables

abbotsford, Victoria | Wurundjeri Land

Built in 1890 with its original stables at the rear, the home boasts ornate fireplaces, lofty ceilings, and timeless details but required a fresh lens to reflect the owners’ love of modern furniture and impactful art.

With a renovation on the horizon, Alyssa Owens Design was enlisted to create a furniture story that brought character and comfort, designed to live beautifully in the now while flexing for future transformations.

without structural changes or paint, the reimagining relied solely on furnishings and art to honor the home’s storied past while weaving in a bold, contemporary edge.

Tucked in the leafy streets of Abbotsford, Stables House is a Victorian gem that blends historic charm with the bold, expressive tastes of its owners.

In the living room, a modular sofa reupholstered in citron plays nicely with a travertine coffee table, setting the foundation for a space both polished and playful. Thoughtful accents, like a crystal objet, a gifted stone chess set and sculptural lighting create a room that feels inviting yet deliberately considered.

The master bedroom is an ode to understated luxury, with a custom rose-gold linen bed taking center stage. A silk lantern pendant adds ethereal softness, while vintage Italian lighting and burl wood furniture lend depth and individuality to the space.

The dining room, with its live-edge timber table handcrafted by the homeowner’s father, is a testament to meaningful design. Cane-backed chairs and a Noguchi Akari 75A pendant lend a touch of Japanese-modern simplicity, while sheer curtains allow light to filter in, softening the space.
